Is Eko Power the Same as EKEDC? The LASERC Licence and Your Token
Your meter says EKEDC, but the news says Eko Power. Who holds the LASERC licence, whether your meter number changes, and where to buy tokens safely, as at Oct 2026.

The meter by the door says EKEDC, but the news keeps mentioning Eko Power, Excel Disco and LASERC. Is this a new company, is it licensed, and can a household still buy tokens the old way?
Yes, it's licensed, and nothing has changed at your meter. Eko Power Limited holds the LASERC licence for southern Lagos and serves you as the successor to EKEDC. Your tariff, meter number and way of paying all stay the same, as at 17 October 2026.
Read on for who holds the licence, whether you need a new meter number, where to buy tokens safely, what happens to your band and where to complain.
Who holds the electricity licence for southern Lagos now?
Lagos runs its own electricity market now. Since a constitutional amendment and the Electricity Act 2023, states can regulate electricity inside their own borders. Lagos used that power to pass its own electricity law, setting up LASERC as the referee for every DisCo that sells power anywhere in the state.
NERC, the federal regulator, ordered the handover from December 2024. By June 2025, LASERC had full charge, which means the rules behind the bill you pay every month now come from Lagos and no longer from Abuja.
In October 2025, LASERC licensed two new firms: Excel Distribution Company Limited and IE Energy Lagos Limited. Their exact role was muddled from day one, with some describing them as replacements for the Eko and Ikeja DisCos and others as subsidiaries of those same DisCos. No public statement spells out how Excel Distribution relates to the current southern Lagos licensee. That licensee calls itself the "successor distribution company", and the old DisCos kept running the whole time.
Here's what moved and what stayed put:
| Item | Before | Now |
|---|---|---|
| Who regulates your supply | NERC | LASERC (full charge since June 2025) |
| Name on your supply | Eko Electricity Distribution Plc (EKEDC) | The new licensee, successor to EKEDC (LASERC licence) |
| Your meter number | Your current number | Same number |
| How you buy a token | Existing channels | Same channels |
| Where you escalate a complaint | NERC | LASERC |
Is Eko Power the same company as EKEDC?
For your meter, yes. The legal names differ, but the supplier works the same way. In October 2025, LASERC directed Eko DisCo to move its Lagos business into a separate company, so the DisCo registered a wholly owned subsidiary for the job and became a holding company. West Power and Gas Limited still owns 60% of that holding company. The Bureau of Public Enterprises holds the rest for the Federal Government.
Nobody bought the DisCo.
The company told customers to keep paying their bills the same way, and the same staff still serve them. Expect EKEDC, EKEDP and Eko Disco to sit beside the new name on receipts and bills for a while.
Do I need a new meter number or a new account?
No. Keep buying with your old meter number.
There's no public notice asking you to change your meter number, re-register the meter or open a fresh account, so treat any message that tells you otherwise with suspicion. A change of name always brings out scammers, the same way a new phone brings out every cousin who wants your old one.
Don't pay any of these. No official notice backs a "meter migration fee", a "new DisCo registration" or a WhatsApp link to "re-register" your meter. Ignore the message and call the DisCo's own customer line.
How to buy an EKEDC prepaid token online safely
Go to the official channels first. On ekedp.com you'll find the payment channels and payment centres, while the DisCo's own app handles tokens, bills and service requests in one place. Vending apps work too, and the steps below are the same wherever you buy.

- Pick Eko Electricity (on AidaPay, look for Eko Electricity Distribution Company [PHCN]) and choose prepaid.
- Type your meter number exactly as it appears on the meter or your last receipt.
- Check the customer name that comes back before you pay.
- Enter the amount and pay.
- Copy the token from your receipt and key it into the meter.
Step 3 is your proof. If the name that comes back doesn't match you or your landlord, stop right there, because your money would land on somebody else's meter instead of yours.
Limits and cashback, as at 17 October 2026:
| Where you buy | Limit per purchase | What you get back |
|---|---|---|
| ekedp.com or the official app | Shown at checkout | Your full token value |
| AidaPay (Eko Electricity Distribution Company [PHCN]) | ₦500 to ₦50,000 | 0.15% cashback (₦15 back on a ₦10,000 token) |
For your own flat or your mum's, buy an EKEDC prepaid token on AidaPay and keep the cashback on every purchase.
Did my tariff or Band A, B or C change with the new licence?
No. The new licence brought no price rise, no new penalty and no compensation scheme. Your charges now follow LASERC's approved tariff methodology instead of NERC's.
Bands haven't moved either. Because each band follows the supply hours your feeder actually gets, a Band A street pays more for the simple reason that it should get more light than a Band C street. Every band and feeder carries set supply hours, and you can hold your supplier to them. If your neighbour across the road sits in a different band, read how Lagos tariff bands work.
Where do I complain now: the DisCo, NERC or LASERC?
Start with the DisCo. Call 0708 067 1170 or 0700 123 5666. Both lines run Monday to Saturday, from 8am to 6pm. If you'd rather talk face to face, walk in at 24/25 Marina Road, Lagos Island, or log the complaint online at ekedp.com/make-complaint.
When someone picks up, give your meter number, the transaction reference and the time you paid. Ask for a complaint number and write it down before you hang up.
If that fails, go to LASERC, not NERC. Since June 2025 LASERC has regulated Lagos retail electricity, so a wrong band, a strange bill or a token that never came is now the commission's business to sort out. Write to it and attach the DisCo's complaint number.
Most missing tokens have a simple fix, so check what to do if your token does not arrive before you queue at Marina. And next time you top up, read the name on screen first.
