Airtel 5G Router Unlimited Plan: ₦25,000 50Mbps vs 100Mbps

An Airtel 5G router subscription costs ₦25,000 a month at Airtel's launch price, for unlimited internet at 50Mbps. Double the speed and you pay ₦45,000. Your first month already sits inside the entry fee.

Airtel sells the router as SmartConnect, a weatherproof box that an installer fixes to an outside wall or roof, with a cable carrying the signal into your house.

Airtel ODU subscription: 50Mbps vs 100Mbps monthly prices

Two unlimited ODU plans exist. Speed is the only difference between them, so the cheaper one is enough for a home with a few phones and a single TV. A busy house, or a small office where several people stream or sit on video calls every evening, should go for the faster plan.

Renewing works from almost anywhere: the Airtel Africa app, the airtel.com.ng/hbb portal, *312# or a QR code. You can also renew Airtel router plans on AidaPay and get cashback paid into your wallet each time.

Ignore the bottom row if you have the ODU. That plan belongs to a different router and costs more.

A year of renewals, worked out

Say you keep the cheaper plan running for a full year. At Airtel's launch price, twelve renewals cost ₦300,000. Through AidaPay the same year comes to ₦298,500. On top of that, about ₦607 lands back in your wallet as cashback.

So the seller barely matters. Pick whichever channel you'll remember to use every month, because the mistake that really costs you money here is a missed renewal and a dead connection.

Is the first month free?

Yes, though it's part of what you pay upfront rather than a gift on top. At launch, the ₦25,000 entry fee bought the router, a SIM, free installation and your first month on the cheaper plan.

From month two, you pay. Set a phone reminder for day 28.

What the Airtel 5G router actually is

Walls and burglary-proof windows weaken signal before it reaches an indoor router. Mounted outside, the ODU (short for outdoor unit) catches a stronger, steadier signal than any box on your table could, then sends it down a cable into the house. After that, phones and laptops join over Wi-Fi like any other network.

Up to 64 devices can connect at once. When light goes, a built-in battery keeps it running for five to six hours. It also comes with parental and usage controls, so you decide how the family connection gets used. So if NEPA takes light at night, the Wi-Fi stays on while the house argues about who's fuelling the generator.

Who it suits, and who should wait

One shared connection is where the ODU earns its keep. Take a family with a smart TV, two laptops and four phones, and one unlimited line will serve them better than four separate data bundles that each run out on their own.

If you might move within a few months, think twice, because the unit is bolted to the building and doesn't travel with you. Someone who lives alone and mostly uses WhatsApp will probably spend less on ordinary phone data.

Before you order: coverage, the wall and power

Where 5G hasn't reached, the router drops back to Airtel's 4G LTE network. You stay online. The plan price doesn't drop with it, though.

Before paying anything, give the Airtel sales executive your full address and ask straight out whether it has 5G coverage.

Next comes the wall. Your installer needs a spot they can reach and a clear route for the cable. If you rent, clear it with your landlord before anyone climbs a ladder, because the installer will be fixing a box to the landlord's wall. For long blackouts, run the router off your inverter or generator line.

How ordering and installation work

Airtel showrooms, the Airtel e-shop and home broadband sales executives all sell the router. Calling 300 works too.

1. Confirm 5G coverage at your address with the sales agent.
2. Pay the entry fee.
3. Agree the mounting spot and cable route with the installer.
4. Wait for the visit, which Airtel aims to make within 48 hours of your order.
5. Before the installer leaves, connect a phone and play a video to test the signal.

While the technicians are still around, ask them to show you the SIM number inside the router and write it down somewhere safe, because every renewal needs it.

Airtel router login and changing the Wi-Fi password

Change the default Wi-Fi password in your first week. Look for the label on the device, which carries the login address, username and password for most Airtel routers. Log in, open the Wi-Fi or WLAN settings, and choose a new password of at least eight characters that mixes letters with numbers so the neighbours next door can't guess it.

How to renew the ODU plan

Router recharges go to the router's own SIM number. Your phone number won't work.

1. Open the Airtel Africa app, the airtel.com.ng/hbb portal or the AidaPay app.
2. Choose the 50Mbps or 100Mbps ODU plan.
3. Enter the router's SIM number.
4. Check the number once more, then pay.
5. Restart the router if the connection doesn't return within a few minutes.

When it slows down or stops: common fixes

Work down these checks in order before you call anyone.

The plan has expired

An expired plan is sneaky. Your router still looks connected, yet nothing loads. Check your balance and expiry in the Airtel Africa app or on the broadband portal. Dialling *323# won't help here, because that balance code works only on a phone line, and the list of data balance codes covers the other networks.

The renewal went to the wrong number

If you paid and nothing changed, hold the receipt next to the router's SIM number and compare them digit by digit. Fix the number before paying again.

It is slow in the evening

Evenings are rush hour. Once the whole street gets home and comes online at the same time, your speeds can dip. Slow all day is a different problem, so ask Airtel if your router is on LTE rather than 5G.

Light has gone for hours

Plug the router into your inverter or generator line once the battery runs down.
