MTN Odiiche, Oyato and Daban bundles: codes, prices, which to buy

One USSD code and a tap on confirm get you a pack of data plus call minutes that lasts two or three days. MTN Odiiche, Oyato, Daban: that is one bundle sold under three regional names. Odiiche is what the East and South-South call it, Oyato belongs to the South-West, and Daban covers the North and the FCT.

Where you stand when you buy decides the name. Nothing else changes. A trader in Aba, a teacher in Ibadan and a nurse in Kano all dial the same code, get the same pack, and see a different word on the confirmation. So if you came looking for three different products, you'll find one. AidaPay doesn't sell these regional packs, so you buy them straight from your own MTN line. MTN Odiiche, Oyato and Daban side by side

You'll see the same pack sizes at the same prices on all three help pages. Prepaid and postpaid lines can both buy, and once your pack is active, its data and minutes work anywhere in Nigeria.

Odiiche: the East, the South-South and Benue

Odiiche covers the South-East and most of the South-South. Then there's Benue. Most maps put it in the North Central, but MTN files it with the eastern states, so a civil servant in Makurdi sees Odiiche on the menu and never Daban.

Texting is where Odiiche falls short. MTN's page gives you no SMS keyword to buy it and none to switch renewal back on, so if you live in Owerri or Port Harcourt, stick with the USSD code. A guessed keyword costs you a text and buys nothing.

Oyato: the South-West without Lagos

Oyato takes the South-West minus Lagos and then adds Edo and Kwara, which is why a shop owner in Benin City gets Oyato even though Edo sits in the South-South. If you like texting, an Oyato line suits you best. You get the full keyword set: SW to buy, RSW to renew and NOSW to stop, each followed by the pack number.

Lagos appears on none of the three lists, so don't expect the code to sell you a regional pack there.

Daban: the North and the FCT

Daban has by far the longest list. You'll find every state in the North-West and North-East on it, along with the FCT and most of the North Central.

Abuja catches visitors out. Say you've come up from Owerri and you dial the code in Wuse. The menu says Daban, because MTN counts Abuja as northern. On a Daban line you text N to buy, RN to renew and NON to stop, with the pack number after each one.

If your state is not on any list

MTN can redraw these maps, and its pages send you to the USSD menu for the current version. Dial *312*14# first. Option 6 on that menu shows where your bundle is sold.

Travel is the easy part. If you're a student taking the night bus from Enugu to Lagos, buy before you board, and the data and minutes stay on your SIM wherever the bus stops.

Buying and checking your bundle

Basic phone or smartphone, the steps don't change, and they're identical under all three names. If you can't decide on a size, start small. Nothing stops you buying again later.

1. Top up until your main airtime covers the whole price of the pack.
2. Dial *312*14*1# for the small pack, or *312*14*2# for the big one.
3. Confirm on the menu that pops up.
4. Dial *310# to see the data and minutes on your line.

"Insufficient balance" means exactly what it says. MTN wants the full price in main airtime and ignores any data already sitting on your line. Picture a trader in Onitsha who loads ₦500 and dials for the big pack. That message keeps coming back, and the only fix is to top up the difference.

The balance screen that shows nothing is the other snag, and it's where people lose money.

Rules that apply to all three

Renewal happens without a word. You top up to cover a week of calls to your mum, and a pack that renews itself quietly eats that airtime while the phone sits in your pocket. If one pack was all you wanted, text your region's stop keyword to 312 on the day you buy.

Rollover comes with a condition. According to MTN, unused data carries forward when you buy another bundle within the rollover period, but its pages never say how long that period is. So buy the next pack before the old one expires. Nobody has published a grace window, and you shouldn't gamble on one.

Read the minutes carefully, because they cover calls to lines inside Nigeria and nothing else. Texts and international calls come out of main airtime. A son in Aba ringing his brother in London won't touch the bundle at all, and once your bundle minutes are gone, local calls cost ₦10 a minute.

Sharing is out too. Your sister can sit right beside you on MTN with an empty balance, and you still can't pass her the data or the minutes.

How the regional packs compare with plain MTN data

The small pack mostly loses

On data alone, the small pack loses. The plain weekly 1GB plan costs the same ₦400, with ₦4 back, and it carries more data for longer. All the regional pack adds is seven minutes of local calls.

Those minutes are its one win, since the plain daily plan with calls costs more and gives you far fewer. If you'll make a few calls inside two days, the small pack is fair value. If you mostly use WhatsApp, take the weekly plan: 1GB for the same ₦400 covers chats and voice notes for days, though neither plan lasts long on video.

The big pack holds up better

Next to the cheapest plain plan of the same size, the big pack costs ₦62 more. You get fifteen minutes of calls and one extra day for that money, and the plain monthly plan with call credit shows how cheap those minutes are: it costs nearly twice as much and carries far fewer.

Data-only users should skip it. The monthly 2GB plan costs ₦950, with ₦9.50 back, and lasts ten times as long.

Buy the regional pack when you'll use both the data and the minutes within a few days, the way you might on a trip home. For data alone, a longer plain plan costs about the same or a little more, and it won't run dry after a couple of days.
