MTN Network Outage 8 Oct: Timeline, Why No Compensation Is Due

MTN calls, data and FibreX went down in Lagos, Oyo, Rivers, Delta and the FCT on 8 October. Here's the timeline, the apology, and why the NCC 24-hour rule means no automatic payout.

Eight hours down, an apology, and the NCC 24-hour rule

MTN's network is back. Thursday's outage knocked out calls, data and FibreX broadband in five areas, Lagos and the FCT among them. MTN has apologised, though it still hasn't named a cause or offered compensation.

Time is the reason you won't get paid. Under NCC rules, a payout only kicks in once a major outage runs past 24 hours, and every report we found puts this MTN network outage at roughly eight. If your phone still shows no bars, restart it or your router, as MTN itself advises.

We checked every fact below on 9 October.

Thursday 8 October: calls, data and FibreX go dark

First came a warning from MTN's support account on X. It spoke of "network challenges" across the affected areas and said some services might be off while engineers worked on the fault, but it gave no start time. One customer told Technext the line died at about 1pm. That's one person's memory, not an official figure.

Calls, data and FibreX broadband went dark across five areas on Thursday 8 October.

Voice calls failed. So did SMS and mobile data, Technext reported. Home broadband went down with them, which meant FibreX households lost their internet at the same moment their phones stopped working. Angry replies piled up on X. MTN then admitted to "a general service downtime" on FibreX.

Some headlines said "Lagos and four other states", and those are the same places MTN named, just with the FCT counted as a state when strictly it isn't one. Four states, then: Lagos, Oyo, Rivers and Delta. Plus the Federal Capital Territory.

Thursday night: MTN confirms, then service returns after about 8 hours

At 9:05pm, Naija News carried MTN's confirmation. By Technext's count, more than eight hours passed before service came back. Innovation Village put it nearer eight and a half. MTN hasn't given an exact restoration time.

Nobody has explained why the MTN network was down. MTN hasn't said whether a fibre cut, a power fault or broken equipment caused it, or whether FibreX and the mobile network failed for the same reason. Your aunty may forward a WhatsApp message that "explains" everything. Treat it as a guess.

Friday 9 October: MTN's all-clear and a signed apology

Friday morning brought MTN's all-clear on X: "We're Back Online!" Services were fully restored in the affected areas, the post said.

Later that day, Ugonwa Nwoye, MTN's Chief Customer Relations and Experience Officer, signed an apology that Legit.ng says called MTN "truly sorry for the inconvenience" and thanked customers for their patience. Read it twice. Compensation doesn't come up once.

Worse, it all happened during Customer Service Week. Ride-hailing drivers, online vendors and remote workers told Technext they lost work when their phones and routers stopped connecting. Meanwhile your monthly bundle keeps ticking down the whole time WhatsApp refuses to load, so the days you paid for go by with nothing to show for them.

Does the MTN network outage qualify for compensation?

Probably not, unless MTN chooses to pay anyway. Size and length do different jobs in the NCC's rules: size decides whether an outage counts as "major", and length decides whether anyone gets paid. We read the regulator's major-outage directive on ncc.gov.ng. An outage is major if it passes any one of these tests.

NCC tests for a major outage
TestThreshold
Reach5% or more of the operator's subscribers, or five or more LGAs
Sites100 or more sites, or 5% of the operator's sites (whichever is fewer), cut off for at least 30 minutes
LocationAny outage that can hurt service in the NCC's top 10 states by traffic

Spread over that many states, this outage almost certainly touched five or more local government areas, and Lagos and the FCT very likely sit among the NCC's busiest states by traffic. Either way, it probably counted as major.

Then comes the clock. Proportional compensation, such as extended validity, only starts once a major outage runs past 24 hours. Eight-odd hours falls well short of that.

Under that same directive, operators must also tell customers the cause, the affected areas and when service should return. MTN named the areas. On the cause and the return time it said nothing, and the NCC hasn't said whether it will act on that gap.

Separate from this outage: the airtime credits MTN began on 4 October

Extra airtime on your MTN line from 4 October has nothing to do with Thursday. Technext reports that MTN started those credits days before the network went down, as payback for poor service between February and April. Innovation Village says the same: those credits don't mean October's outage will be paid for. For who qualifies, see our 5 October explainer on MTN's quality-of-service airtime.

After 9 October: what to watch, and how to report MTN network problems

Watch for an MTN statement that finally names the cause. The NCC could reply with one of its own, or a sanction. Keep an eye on its next quarterly complaints figures as well, because Techeconomy counted 413,587 telecom complaints in Nigeria in the first half of this year alone.

If you lost money or work, get it on record.

  1. Write down when your service stopped and when it came back.
  2. Screenshot the empty signal bar or the failed messages.
  3. Complain to MTN first and ask for a ticket number.
  4. If MTN doesn't resolve it, call the NCC free on 622 and give that ticket number.
  5. If you can't get through on 622, use the NCC's consumer complaints portal or message @consumersncc on X.

Bought MTN airtime on AidaPay that failed during the outage? Open Settings, then Support, and raise a complaint ticket with the transaction reference.

Start with the simple fix today: restart your phone, check your data balance, then run these MTN USSD codes for checking your line to make sure everything works again.

Frequently asked questions

Will MTN compensate me for the outage on 8 October?
Not automatically. NCC rules only require a payout once a major outage passes 24 hours, and reports put this one at about eight. MTN could still choose to offer something, but it hasn't announced any payout.
Why is my MTN internet not working even though the network is back?
Your phone may still be holding on to the dead connection. Restart it, as MTN advises, then check your data balance. If it still fails, complain to MTN and keep the ticket number.
What caused the MTN outage?
MTN hasn't said. Its notices never mentioned a fibre cut, a power fault or failed equipment, so any cause you see shared online is a guess.
Where do I report MTN network problems?
Go to MTN first and ask for a ticket number. If that doesn't fix it, call the NCC free on 622 and quote the ticket. You can also use the NCC's consumer complaints portal or message @consumersncc on X.
Is MTN network down in Nigeria right now?
Not as at 9 October 2026. MTN posted "We're Back Online!" that Friday morning and said services were fully restored. If you still have no signal, restart your phone or router.
Which states lost MTN service on 8 October?
MTN's alert named Lagos, Oyo, Rivers, Delta and the FCT. Calls, SMS and mobile data failed there, and MTN confirmed its FibreX home broadband went down too.
How do I fix my MTN network if it's still not working?
Restart your phone, or your router if you use FibreX. If that doesn't help, complain to MTN and ask for a ticket number. Still stuck? Call the NCC free on 622 with that number.
