MTN Outage Compensation: ₦174 Lost on a Daily Plan, ₦0 Owed
A FibreX home lost about ₦354, a ₦492 daily bundle about ₦174. Why none of it comes back, and when a ₦595 Airtel backup line is worth keeping.

A FibreX Basic home lost about ₦354 of paid internet in Thursday's MTN outage, and none of it comes back. MTN outage compensation under NCC rules only kicks in after a full day offline. This outage stopped well short of that.
On Thursday 8 October, calls, mobile data and FibreX home internet went off in parts of Lagos, the FCT and three other states. MTN apologised, and lines were working again by Friday. The silence lasted roughly eight and a half hours, and every sum below uses that figure so you can see exactly what the day took from your own plan.
MTN FibreX price on the ₦30,000 Basic plan: about ₦354 gone
Start with the home router, because FibreX Basic is the entry plan at ₦30,000 a month.
Working out your own loss takes three moves. Split the monthly price into days, split one day into hours, then multiply by the hours you spent offline, and a Basic subscriber lands on roughly ₦354. You didn't lose gigabytes, because FibreX is unlimited. What went was paid time: the hours spent begging a neighbour to switch on their hotspot so you could send one email.
Bigger plans lose more, since each of their days costs more. On FibreX Standard the hit is bigger again, as the table further down shows.
The ₦492 MTN 1GB daily bundle: ₦174 of a 24-hour clock
This is MTN's one-day data plan with a few call minutes thrown in. You'll find its AidaPay price, cashback included, in the table below.
Its clock starts the moment you buy. It keeps ticking for a full day whether MTN is up or down, so the outage swallowed about ₦174 of your bundle. That's more than a third of what you paid.
Wednesday buyers had it worse. If your bundle's day ran out while MTN was still down, every megabyte you hadn't touched simply expired, and an Airtel two-day plan would have kept you online for ₦103 more.
Why a 30-day plan barely noticed (about ₦14)
The MTN 30-day data plans felt it least. Take the cheapest one in the table below: eight and a half hours of its validity is worth about ₦14.
Your unused data just waits. When the network comes back, it's still sitting there, and all you've lost is a few hours on the clock while a daily bundle gives up a big slice of its price.
What each plan lost, side by side
Prices as at 10 October 2026. The Airtel row is a bundle you could keep on a second SIM.

| Plan | Price | Cost per day | Lost in 8.5 hours |
|---|---|---|---|

| MTN FibreX Standard 100 Mbps, 30 days | ₦45,000 | ₦1,500 | about ₦531 |
| MTN 1GB + 1.5min, 1 day (AidaPay) | ₦492 (₦2.95 cashback) | ₦492 | about ₦174 |
| MTN 3GB, 30 days (AidaPay) | ₦1,200 (₦12 cashback) | ₦40 | about ₦14 |

Why there's no MTN outage compensation for this one
NCC rules draw the line at a full day of downtime.
Once an outage passes that point, the operator owes you proportional compensation, such as extra validity on your bundles, but Thursday's outage covered only just over a third of that window. So the rule doesn't apply, however much stress the day cost you.
Some of you also saw airtime credits from MTN this month, starting as low as ₦20. Those credits pay for poor network quality earlier in the year under a separate programme. MTN hasn't said whether anything is coming for Thursday.
Does a ₦595 Airtel backup SIM pay for itself?
For a FibreX home, yes, if MTN fails you twice. Airtel's 2GB AWUF bundle runs for two days and costs more than the ₦354 Thursday took from a Basic subscriber, but two outages like it inside those two days (₦708) would cover it. It isn't limited to social apps, so you stay fully online. While you wait for MTN to sort itself out, that's often enough.
Daily-bundle users face tighter sums. One outage like Thursday's costs you well under the backup's price, so the Airtel bundle only earns its keep if MTN fails you four times inside its two days.
Monthly backups are harder to defend on cost alone. Being reachable is the better reason. Think of the client waiting on your reply, or the dispatch rider circling the estate because nobody can find your gate, and you'll see why that matters more than the naira on a busy afternoon.
If Thursday hit you, check what's left on your bundle with these MTN USSD codes for balance and complaints. Complain to MTN first on 300. If that goes nowhere, take it to the NCC on 622.
