Electricity Token Not Received? IKEDC, AEDC Retrieval and Refunds

Paid for light and no 20-digit token came? Check the receipt, requery, ask IKEDC or AEDC to resend it, or claim a refund, then take it to NERC after 15 working days.

Find the token, requery, retrieve it, or claim your refund

The debit alert came. On screen, the app says successful, or it has sat on pending for twenty minutes, and there's no 20-digit token anywhere. Most cases of an electricity token not received end the same way: the DisCo generated it and it just hasn't reached you, or the DisCo's vending system is crawling. So check the receipt and requery the order before you do anything else.

Don't buy a second token in a panic, because the first one can still land later and leave you chasing a refund for the extra one. Start at the top. Stop once the token turns up.

Electricity token not received, but the order says successful

Good news, mostly. The token exists.

  1. Open the transaction history in the app or bank you paid with and tap that purchase. Most receipts print the token right there.
  2. Search your SMS and email for your meter number or the vendor's name. Check spam too. Really.
  3. Count the digits. A prepaid token has 20, and the meter wants every single one of them typed in order before you press Enter, so a token copied from a cut-off SMS preview won't work.

On AidaPay the token sits on the receipt in Transactions, and a copy comes by SMS.

Stuck on pending: the DisCo's system is slow or down

Pending means the vendor has your money. The DisCo hasn't sent a token back yet. Look at the DisCo's official X or Facebook page and scroll through the comments under its most recent posts, not just the posts themselves. If the comments are full of people with the exact same complaint, the delay is on their side and there's nothing wrong with your meter or your account.

Nobody has published an official delivery time, since NERC's complaints procedure doesn't give one and neither do AEDC's pages. Requery the order if it's still pending and no SMS has come. Then wait.

Don't pay again while it hangs. Outages aren't always accidents, either: Nairametrics reported that Ikeja Electric switched off its billing and vending channels in July 2022 for a system upgrade.

Still nothing? Ask your DisCo to resend it

Have these ready: meter number, amount, date and time of payment, and the transaction reference from the receipt.

Ikeja Electric (IKEDC)

Dial *7024#, choose Token Retrieval and enter your meter number. According to Techpoint Africa's walkthrough of that menu, the service costs ₦20 and your NIN has to be linked to the meter. Fees move. Read the charge on screen before you confirm.

Abuja Electricity (AEDC)

AEDC's Pay4Energy hub at pay4energy.abujaelectricity.com has a Retrieve Token form that takes your transaction reference, and its chat assistant can pull up a meter's token history. If the portal doesn't help, call 08039070070, WhatsApp 09161012128 or email customercare@abujaelectricity.com, the channels AEDC listed when we checked on 9 October 2026.

EKEDC, IBEDC, PHED and the rest

We couldn't find a verified USSD retrieval code for the other DisCos. Ring the customer-care line printed on your DisCo's own website, and ignore any code an uncle forwards on WhatsApp that isn't listed there.

Somebody else's name on the receipt

Read the customer name. Not yours? Then one wrong digit probably sent the credit to a stranger's meter. It's the hardest case here.

Legit.ng covered one such mistake: a customer loaded ₦300,000 onto another person's meter and said Ikeja Electric told her it "can't refund or re-allocate" the credit. That was one DisCo in one case, reported in October 2025, so it isn't a rule for every company, but don't plan your month around getting that money back.

Act anyway. Send the vendor your reference number straight away, then file a written complaint at the DisCo's Customer Care Unit and keep the acknowledgement, because you'll need it if this ends up with NERC. Next time you buy an electricity token with the meter name check, look at the name on the confirmation screen before the PIN goes in.

The vend failed and you were still debited

Here you want your money back, not a token. Requery once. Make sure it really failed. Then complain to the vendor about that specific order, quote the transaction reference and save every reply, because the DisCo or NERC may ask to see them. On AidaPay, go to Settings, then Support, where you can chat, open a complaint ticket, call or email; add the transaction reference or hash, which sits on the receipt beside the session ID. Paid at a bank or POS terminal instead? Talk to the bank or agent.

It arrived, but the meter says REJECT

Different problem.

Close-up photo of a wall-mounted prepaid electricity meter's keypad and screen with a red indicator light, illustrating a rejected token.
A rejected token usually means the meter is waiting for its key change tokens (KCTs) before it will accept new ones.

A common culprit is a meter that still needs its key change tokens (KCTs): two 20-digit codes that update the meter's security key so it will accept tokens made under the new one. That's covered in our guide to what each token error on your meter means, which takes the fixes one at a time.

If none of this worked: your DisCo, then NERC

NERC's complaints and redress procedure starts with the DisCo, in writing. A subject line like "Electricity token not received" plus your meter number tells the officer what they're dealing with before they open anything.

  1. Write to the DisCo's Customer Care Unit with your meter number, receipt and transaction reference, and ask for an acknowledgement.
  2. Give them 15 working days.
  3. Still unhappy? Go to your nearest NERC Forum Office, or send a letter or email with your documents if none is close.
  4. If the Forum's decision doesn't settle it, contact NERC head office through nerc.gov.ng/contact-nerc.

Keep every receipt and screenshot until the token or the money is back. The fix-it library covers the other meter headaches.

Frequently asked questions

How many digits is an electricity token?
Twenty. Type all 20 before you press Enter. Anything shorter isn't the token.
How do I retrieve my Ikeja Electric token?
Dial *7024#, choose Token Retrieval and enter your meter number. Techpoint Africa reported a ₦20 charge and said your NIN must be linked to the meter, so check the charge on screen before you confirm.
How do I retrieve my AEDC token?
Enter your transaction reference in the Retrieve Token form on pay4energy.abujaelectricity.com. If that fails, call AEDC on 08039070070, send a WhatsApp message to 09161012128 or email customercare@abujaelectricity.com.
Can I get my money back if I sent a token to the wrong meter?
Usually not. In a case Legit.ng reported in October 2025, Ikeja Electric said it "can't refund or re-allocate" the credit. Contact the vendor and the DisCo at once anyway, with your reference number.
How long does a DisCo have to resolve my complaint?
NERC gives the DisCo 15 working days to resolve a written complaint. After that, you can go to the nearest NERC Forum Office.
How long does it take to get an electricity token after paying?
There's no official clock. Neither NERC's complaints procedure nor the AEDC pages we checked on 9 October 2026 publish one, so requery a pending order before you think about paying again.
How do I find a lost electricity token?
Start with the receipt in the transaction history of the app or bank you paid with, then search your SMS and email, spam folder included. Your DisCo can also resend it through IKEDC's *7024# Token Retrieval or AEDC's Retrieve Token form.
Buy your electricity token in the appEvery DisCo, token delivered instantly, receipt kept for you.
