How to Buy Data on Airtel: *312# and Why 8GB Beats ₦790 Weekly
Four weekly 1GB Airtel bundles cost ₦690 more than one 4GB monthly plan. See the worked prices, the *312# steps, buying for another number and what to do when it fails.

If you buy Airtel's weekly bundle four times, you pay ₦3,160 a month. One monthly plan with the same data costs ₦690 less.
How to buy data on Airtel is the easy part. Dial *312# on your own line or open the My Airtel app, and the price comes out of your airtime, while you can top up any other Airtel number online. The sums come first. Steps and fixes follow.
The 1GB-a-week habit: ₦790 four times is ₦3,160
Say you're on WhatsApp and Instagram all day and catch some YouTube at night. That's about a gigabyte a week. Each time it runs out, you dial the code and grab the weekly bundle again, because ₦790 at a time never feels like much, and then the month ends.
You've paid ₦3,160.
On a tight week, the daily bundle looks like a way out. It isn't. Each one dies after a single day, so four of them buy you four days online and leave the rest of your month with nothing on the line.
Switching to one monthly plan: ₦690 less for 4GB, or 8GB for ₦2,965
Bigger plans usually cost less per gigabyte. One plan breaks the pattern.
| Option | Lasts | Price (cashback) | Per GB | Cost for a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1GB weekly ×4 | 7 days | ₦790 (₦4 cashback) | ₦790 | ₦3,160 for 4GB over 28 days |
| 1GB daily ×4 | 1 day | ₦495 (₦2 cashback) | ₦495 | ₦1,980 for 4 days only |
| 2GB monthly | 1 month | ₦1,485 (₦10.19 cashback) | ₦742.50 | One purchase |
| 3GB monthly | 1 month | ₦1,980 (₦15 cashback) | ₦660 | One purchase |
| 4GB monthly | 1 month | ₦2,470 (₦15 cashback) | ₦617.50 | One purchase |
| 8GB monthly | 1 month | ₦2,965 (₦15 cashback) | ₦370.63 | One purchase |
| 10GB monthly | 1 month | ₦3,950 (₦20 cashback) | ₦395 | One purchase |
| 4GB 7-day ×4 | 7 days | ₦1,485 (₦10.19 cashback) | ₦371.25 | ₦5,940 for 16GB over 28 days |
| 4GB binge | 2 days | ₦995 (₦4.78 cashback) | ₦248.75 | One weekend |
Move that same data onto the 4GB monthly plan and you keep ₦690, you stop running dry every Sunday, and the bundle covers a full month instead of four weeks.
The real surprise is the 8GB plan. Its per-gigabyte price beats even the largest monthly plan. You pay ₦495 more than for the 4GB plan and get double the data, which still costs less than four weekly bundles. If you use about a gigabyte a week, buy this one.
Heavy months: ₦5,940 on weekly 4GBs vs ₦3,950 for 10GB
Some months you need far more, like exam season or the weeks you hotspot a laptop. Buying the weekly 4GB bundle four times over comes to ₦5,940. If ten gigabytes will see you through, the biggest monthly plan saves you ₦1,990 and you only buy it once, though only the weekly route gets you to the full sixteen.
A heavy weekend is different. On paper, a two-day binge bundle fits it better than a bigger monthly plan. Stack the binge bundle from the table on top of the monthly plan you'd use anyway, and your month comes to ₦3,465. Even the 2GB binge at ₦595 tips you past the price of the 8GB plan. So if you binge most months, start on the bigger plan and leave the extras alone.
Social bundles look cheap, but they only work on social and video apps such as WhatsApp and TikTok, so your browser and your bank app get nothing.
How to buy data on Airtel with *312# or the app
On your own line, *312# is the quickest route.
- Dial *312# from the Airtel line you want to load.
- Choose a category: daily, weekly, monthly or binge.
- Pick the plan.
- Confirm. Airtel takes the price from your airtime.
Prefer tapping to dialling? Open the My Airtel app, register your Airtel number, then pick a bundle and confirm.
Watch out for auto-renewal. To stop a monthly plan renewing itself, dial *312*4*amount*1# and type the plan price, digits only, where "amount" sits. Weekly plans use a code that starts *312*3* instead. Our full list of Airtel USSD codes covers the rest.
Buying Airtel data for another number: *312# or online
Buying for a friend takes one extra tap. Dial *312# from your own phone, pick the plan, choose Buy for others and type their number, and the price comes out of your airtime, not theirs.
Maybe your own airtime is dry too. You can still buy Airtel data for any number on AidaPay, including the 8GB monthly plan, and the data lands on their line without either of you needing airtime. Both routes work for Airtel numbers only, so MTN and Glo lines can't receive the bundle.
7 reasons your Airtel data purchase fails
Airtel doesn't sell half a bundle. If your airtime falls even a little short of the full price, the purchase won't go through, so top up first.
An unpaid *303# loan catches a lot of people out. Airtel takes the loan back from your next top-up before anything else. Load enough to clear the debt with the full bundle price left over.
Lines with no NIN linked get barred. Dial *996# on that line and follow the prompts. Linking is free.
Sometimes the USSD session just times out. Wait a minute, then dial again or switch to the app.
Check the number twice before you confirm, because one wrong digit sends the bundle to a stranger and a number on another network won't receive it at all.
An old plan may have renewed itself and eaten the airtime meant for the new one. Cancel that renewal with the code above before you top up again.
Debited with nothing to show for it? Dial *323# to see your active bundles and when they expire. If nothing arrived, call Airtel on 111 with the exact time you bought it, or, if you paid on AidaPay, send AidaPay support the transaction reference instead.
Before your next top-up, dial *323# to see what's left. For other SIMs, use the data balance codes for every network. Then buy one monthly plan that covers the whole month, and let that weekly bundle you keep grabbing at 11pm finally rest.
