How Can I Borrow Data From Airtel? *303#, 15% Fee, What You Owe
Data finished and no airtime? Dial *303# to borrow Airtel data. See what a ₦500 loan really gives you, why *500# fails, and why the menu may turn you down.

"My Airtel data has run out, I have no airtime and I can't recharge right now. How can I borrow data from Airtel, and how much will it take from my next recharge?"
Dial *303# from the Airtel line, choose the borrow-data option and accept one of the offers shown. About 15% comes off the top as a fee, so a ₦500 offer delivers ₦425 of data, and the full ₦500 is taken from your next recharge before anything else reaches your balance.
As at 10 October 2026, borrowing works again. Airtel switched it off on 17 April and brought it back on 25 May, which is why some people still think it's gone.
How can I borrow data from Airtel with *303#?
You only need the Airtel SIM in your phone. No airtime, bank app or forms.
- Dial *303# from the Airtel line that needs data.
- Choose the borrow-data option, not borrow airtime, since both loans share one menu.
- Pick a data offer and confirm it.
- Wait for the SMS telling you how much data arrived and what you now owe.
Because *303# is the borrow code the NCC set for every network in Nigeria, the same digits work on other lines too, so it was never an Airtel-only trick.
Offers follow how you've used the line. Recharge often and bigger ones may show up. Airtel publishes no fixed list of loan sizes. The offers on your own screen are the only price list that counts for your line, even if a friend on another Airtel number sees something different. If you use the Airtel Thanks app, look there for a borrow option as well.
Why doesn't *500# work any more?
*500# used to be Airtel's own borrow code. Then the NCC moved every network onto shared short codes by a May 2023 deadline, and the old one stopped working. Use *303#.
Borrowing itself went quiet for about six weeks this year. It's back now:
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 17 April 2026 | Airtel switched off airtime and data borrowing to line up with the FCCPC's new digital lending rules (the DEON rules). |
| 25 May 2026 | Airtel brought borrowing back with the same codes and the same repayment method. |
| 20 July 2026 | A Federal High Court upheld the DEON rules but ruled that the FCCPC can't license telecom operators. Only the NCC can. |
So if a friend told you in May that Airtel had stopped lending, they were right for a while.
How much will I owe on my next recharge?
The usual charge is about 15%, though Airtel doesn't publish the figure. It comes off the top. You receive less than the offer's face value, yet you still owe every naira of it when your next recharge lands. Read the screen before you confirm, because your line's exact figure shows there.
Take a ₦500 offer. You get ₦425 worth of data. Your next recharge pays back the full ₦500, and the gap is Airtel's fee.
Here's the same sum at three sizes, worked out at 15%:
| Loan offer | Value you receive | Fee | Taken from next recharge |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₦100 | ₦85 | ₦15 | ₦100 |
| ₦200 | ₦170 | ₦30 | ₦200 |
| ₦500 | ₦425 | ₦75 | ₦500 |
Repaying takes no effort on your side. Airtel collects what you owe the moment your next top-up arrives.
Why won't Airtel let me borrow data?
Airtel doesn't publish its full rules on who qualifies. Before you dial *303# again, run through these checks:
- If you're still owing from an old loan, clear it first. A new one won't go through while the last is unpaid, and any recharge settles it.
- Give a new or rarely used line time. Offers follow usage, so keep recharging as normal and check the menu later.
- Dial from the prepaid Airtel line itself, because the loan goes to the SIM you dial from and that SIM repays it. Postpaid and router SIMs are usually left out.
- Link your NIN to the SIM. Lines without a verified NIN are commonly turned away from the borrow menu.
How do I check my data and what I still owe?
Dial *323# for your data balance. Every network uses that code, and the page of data balance codes for every network covers the rest.
Keep the confirmation SMS. It shows exactly what you owe, and you'll want to match your next recharge's deduction against it.
Every other Airtel code is in the full list of Airtel USSD codes.
Is a ₦495 1GB bundle cheaper than a ₦500 loan?
At 11pm, when your data dies halfway through a WhatsApp voice note and every shop on the street has shut, borrowing makes sense. It needs no cash in hand. Buying does.
When someone else can pay, a small bundle costs less. Prices as at 10 October 2026:
| Option | Cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Borrow a ₦500 offer on *303# | ₦500 from your next recharge | ₦425 worth of data |
| AidaPay: Airtel 230MB - 2 Days | ₦199 (₦0.40 cashback) | 230MB for 2 days |
| AidaPay: Airtel 1GB (Social Media) - 3 Days | ₦296 (₦1 cashback) | 1GB for WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and TikTok only |
| AidaPay: Airtel 1GB - 1 Day | ₦495 (₦2 cashback) | 1GB for 1 day |
| AidaPay: Airtel 1GB - Weekly | ₦790 (₦4 cashback) | 1GB for 7 days, plus 2GB YouTube night and 200MB bonus |
A sibling or friend can buy a small Airtel bundle for someone's number on AidaPay in a few minutes.
Look at the one-day bundle: at ₦495 for 1GB it costs about the same as a ₦500 loan, with no fee and nothing waiting to swallow your next recharge. If nobody can pay for you tonight, dial *303#, borrow the smallest offer that gets you through, and recharge a little more than you owe in the morning.
