What the AEDC MAP refund is
Under the Meter Asset Provider scheme, many AEDC customers in the FCT, Niger, Kogi and Nasarawa paid for their own prepaid meter rather than wait for one. The meter still belongs to the network, so AEDC owes that money back. It pays in electricity, not cash: approved refunds are turned into units and credited as tokens for your prepaid meter.
In March 2026 NERC's Order NERC/2026/025 told every DisCo to clear its overdue meter refunds within 12 months, with two tokens a month for prepaid customers while the backlog is cleared. AEDC runs a portal for it at maprefund.abujaelectricity.com, and that is what this checker asks.
Your three tokens
AEDC's refund history is grouped by month. Each month can carry up to three tokens:
- Refund token (T1): the month's normal refund instalment.
- Backlog token (T2): part of the catch-up on refunds that fell behind.
- Backlog difference token (T3): a further backlog credit, as AEDC labels it. Not every month has one.
AEDC's instruction is to load the tokens serially. The checker already lists them in that order: the oldest month first, and T1, T2, T3 within each month. Load one, wait for the meter to accept it, then load the next.
Alongside the tokens you see three figures from AEDC's record: what your meter cost, the total refunded so far and the balance still to be refunded. The balance tells you roughly how many months of tokens are still coming.
How the check works
The box at the top of this page is the same screen AidaPay users see in the app. You enter your meter number and press Check Refund. Our server opens AEDC's portal, asks it about that meter exactly as the portal's own form does, and turns the reply into the list you see. The name and account number are partly hidden, enough for you to recognise your own record.
If AEDC has nothing for the number, you see "No MAP refund found". If the portal is slow or down, you get a plain "could not check right now" and can try again shortly. A meter checked twice within a few minutes is answered from a short cache so AEDC is not asked again.
Getting help
AEDC handles MAP refund questions by email at map.refund@abujaelectricity.com and by phone on 0803 907 0070, as well as at its customer experience centres. Have your meter number and your meter payment receipt ready.
Eligible customers are also told by SMS and email, with the meter number, the amount credited and a 20-digit token. If a token is rejected, check every digit first; our rejected token guide covers the meter errors. When you need more units, buy AEDC tokens in the AidaPay app, with the meter name checked before you pay.
