Which power band are you on?

Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company puts every feeder in a NERC service band, A to E. Your band decides how many hours of power you should get each day and how much you pay per unit.

Covers Oyo, Ogun, Osun and Kwara, and parts of Niger, Ekiti and Kogi.

Hours are the minimum average supply a day that NERC sets for each band. Band A pays the highest price per unit because it promises the most power.

What your band means

Nigeria has priced electricity by service since 1 November 2020, when NERC brought in the Service Based Tariff. The idea is simple: pay for the hours you actually get. Every feeder, the line that runs from the substation to your transformer, is put in one of five bands by the average hours of supply it delivers a day.

More hours cost more. Band A pays by far the highest price per unit, and Bands C, D and E the lowest. That is why the band on your meter matters: two homes on different feeders can buy the same ₦10,000 token and get very different numbers of units.

The band belongs to the feeder, not to you or your street. Move house and your band can change. A feeder can also move between bands when its supply record changes.

How the check works

The checker at the top of this page is the same one AidaPay users get in the app. You enter a prepaid meter number or a postpaid account number and press Get Info. Our server passes that number to IBEDC's own feeder lookup, the one behind ibedc.com/feeder-info, and turns the reply into the card you see.

Nothing is guessed. If IBEDC does not know the number, you get IBEDC's "not found" answer. If their site is slow or down, you get a plain "could not check right now" and can try again a minute later. A number checked twice within a few minutes is answered from a short cache so IBEDC is not asked again.

IBEDC serves Oyo, Ogun, Osun and Kwara, and parts of Niger, Ekiti and Kogi. A meter elsewhere belongs to another DisCo and will not be found here.

Reading the result

The coloured card leads with your band letter and the hours that band promises, drawn as a 24-hour bar so you can see the promise at a glance. Under it is your tariff: the price per kWh IBEDC charges on your feeder.

Below the card are the details IBEDC returns:

  • Feeder, the line that supplies your area. Quote it in any complaint about hours of supply.
  • Substation (DSS), the distribution substation, which is your transformer.
  • Business unit, the IBEDC office that looks after your area.
  • Tariff code, IBEDC's code for your customer class.
  • Customer and account, partly hidden so you can recognise your own record without the page showing a stranger's details in full.

If your band looks wrong

The common complaint is simple: the checker says Band A, the house gets nothing close to 20 hours. Write down the times power comes and goes for two weeks. Then contact IBEDC with your account number, the feeder name from the result and your log. Feeders that keep missing their band's hours are meant to be reviewed and moved down.

If IBEDC does not resolve it, NERC's customer complaints forum for your state is the next step. Keep the reference number IBEDC gives you, because the forum will ask for it.

Also check you entered the right number. A meter number and an account number can point to different records if a meter was changed, and an old account may still show an old feeder.

Frequently asked questions

Do I use my meter number or account number?
Either works for IBEDC. Prepaid customers usually use the meter number; postpaid customers use the account number printed on the bill, slashes and dash included.
Which areas does IBEDC cover?
Oyo, Ogun, Osun and Kwara, and parts of Niger, Ekiti and Kogi. Outside those areas your DisCo is different and this checker will not find your number.
What do the bands A to E mean?
Since November 2020 NERC has priced electricity by service: each feeder is placed in a band by the hours of supply it delivers a day. Band A is 20 hours or more, Band B 16 to 20, Band C 12 to 16, Band D 8 to 12 and Band E 4 to 8. The fewer the hours, the lower the price per unit.
Why is my neighbour on a different band?
The band belongs to the feeder, not the street. Two houses a short walk apart can sit on different feeders, get different hours of light and pay different prices per unit.
My feeder is Band A but I get far less than 20 hours.
Keep a simple log of supply hours for two weeks, then report it to IBEDC with your account number and feeder name. A Band A feeder that keeps missing its hours should be reviewed and moved to a lower band.
