75 million lines got airtime. Here's how to check if yours did

As at 21 October 2026, 75 million Nigerian phone lines have received airtime this year because their network let them down. Nobody had to apply. Each network topped up qualifying lines by itself.

Most sums were small.

Treat that 75 million as the networks' own count. NCC compensation for poor network is paid by the operators, and the regulator has been checking their figures independently since a board meeting in May, so the total isn't audited yet.

A second number matters more if you've ever lost money on a recharge. Nearly 3 million subscribers got refunds this year for airtime and data they paid for and never received. That scheme works differently, and you can chase it yourself.

Two rounds so far, and why yours was probably tiny

Round one paid for bad service between November 2025 and January. All four networks took part. NCC ordered it on 29 March and credits started landing in April. Your share came down to where you live and how much you spend. If your network missed its quality targets in your local government area (LGA), and you'd made at least one paid call or data session in that window, you were in. Operators then scaled each credit to your average usage. Heavy users got more. Light users got crumbs. In practice that meant anything from about ₦19 up to close to ₦950.

Round two is MTN's alone.

It covers disruptions from February to April and began crediting on 4 October, under a joint order from NCC and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). Some customers saw ₦20. The biggest credit reached ₦1,436. The airtime doesn't expire, and it works for calls, texts and data like any other airtime. One catch: MTN treats these credits as separate from data-billing complaints, so a credit won't close a data dispute you've already raised.

Now the sore point. MTN, Airtel and Glo all set their minimum airtime top-up at ₦50, and T2's floor is higher still, so a ₦20 credit is less than half of the smallest recharge you're allowed to buy. After weeks of calls dropping mid-sentence, feeling short-changed is fair.

Nobody got data bundles or cash. Over the year the regulator also counted more than 6,500 network fixes, such as new sites and upgraded equipment, and those should mean fewer dropped calls, but they put nothing in your account.

Did NCC compensation for poor network reach your line?

No public lookup by phone number exists. Your own phone is the proof, and it takes two minutes.

  1. Open SMS on the line you're checking.
  2. Search for "compensation" or "Quality of Service".
  3. For round one, scroll back to April and May. For MTN's second round, start from 4 October.
  4. Dial your balance code and compare the balance with what you loaded: *310# on MTN or Airtel, #124*1# on Glo, *232# on T2.

MTN's text is easy to miss because it reads like any other promo. Look for a line saying the message relates to a Quality of Service compensation programme for service disruptions, followed by the February to April period. On other networks the wording differs, so search both terms. An odd small credit you never bought, sitting next to that message, is your payment. For the other shortcuts on that SIM, there's a list of MTN codes, the airtime balance check included, and Airtel users can keep the Airtel balance and complaint codes nearby.

Getting nothing can still be correct. Because eligibility went LGA by LGA, you in Lagos and your brother in Ibadan could be on the same network while only one of you got paid. Idle lines missed out as well, including the spare SIM that has sat in your drawer since last Christmas.

Still sure you qualified? Start with your network's customer care line or app and write down the complaint number it gives you, because everything after this depends on that number. Then, if the network doesn't sort it out, call 622, NCC's free consumer line, and quote it. Skip your network and you'll simply be sent back.

Lost money on a failed recharge? That refund you can chase

Signal quality has nothing to do with these refunds. They cover a different headache: your bank or wallet takes the money for airtime or a data bundle, and nothing lands on the line.

NCC works with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the networks and payment providers to trace those payments and send the money back. Nothing arrives on its own. You push.

Before you complain, save four things: the transaction reference, the date and time you paid, the amount, and whatever reply the network sent by SMS or on screen. Take all of it to your network first, and only go to 622 if they stall, quoting the complaint number they gave you so NCC can pick up the case where the network left it.

Vanishing data? Same route. A planned NCC rule would give you daily records of your data use and balance, but it isn't in force yet, so before-and-after screenshots of your balance are still the best evidence you can bring to a complaint.

Once the balance check is done, you may still need to recharge. On AidaPay you can top up airtime with cashback for your own line or someone else's, with 1.8% back on MTN and 2% on Glo, as at the date above.

Do the SMS search tonight. It takes less time than your weekly data takes to finish.

Frequently asked questions

Why did MTN send me only ₦20?
Credits were sized by your LGA and your average spend, so light users got small amounts. ₦20 is less than half of the ₦50 minimum airtime top-up, which is why so many people feel short-changed.
How do I know if I was compensated?
Search your SMS for "compensation" or "Quality of Service", then dial your balance code (*310# on MTN and Airtel) and compare it with what you loaded. An odd small credit you never bought is your payment.
My network was bad but I got nothing. What now?
Your LGA may have met the quality targets, or your line sat idle in the window. If you still think you qualified, complain to your network, keep the complaint number, and call 622 if they don't fix it.
How do I get money back for a failed airtime or data purchase?
That refund isn't automatic. Save the transaction reference, date, time, amount and the network's reply, complain to your network first, then call 622 if they stall.
