Night bundles cost less per GB, but the data dies at 5am

Glo's ₦120 night bundle gives you the cheapest data per GB of any option in the table below. The catch is the clock: it only works between midnight and 5am.

So pick a night data plan for one big download you can schedule while you sleep. Pick a weekly plan for everything else, because whatever night data you haven't touched by morning simply disappears and nothing rolls over to the next night.

What a night data plan is good at

A night plan does one job well, and that job happens while you're asleep. Think of a phone update, or a series you'll watch offline later, started just after midnight and left to run until morning with the charger plugged into the wall.

What happens when the night window closes

Glo and Airtel night data works only from midnight to 5am, and Glo's bundles last a single night. That's where the cheap rate falls apart. Say you buy the bigger Glo bundle, watch a few videos and doze off with the phone on your chest after using maybe 300MB. Your real cost has now climbed to about ₦400 per GB, which is dearer than most of the regular plans in the table and wipes out the saving you bought it for. Background apps may have eaten some of it too.

Who can buy night bundles on Glo, Airtel and MTN

Any Glo or Airtel customer can buy a night bundle through the network's menu, whatever tariff the line is on. MTN works differently. Its Pulse Nightlife bundle is only for MTN Pulse users, and since Pulse users can now move to MTN X, dial *406# to see whether your line still gets it. Most MTN users are better off with a weekly AWUF bundle (one of the discounted bundles in the table).

Is regular data cheaper than night data once you count the hours?

Regular data wins the moment you need it in daylight. On Glo, the weekly plan costs only a little more per GB than the night rate, and that small extra buys you a full week of round-the-clock use instead of five sleepy hours a night.

Glo's own weekly bundles come with a night bonus too. Between midnight and 5am, Glo spends that bonus first and only then starts on your main data.

Both Airtel plans in the table carry a YouTube Night bonus as well, so if YouTube is the thing keeping you awake, you may not need a separate night pack at all.

Regular plans have their own catch. You pay more upfront, and short AWUF bundles end after one to seven days whether you used them or not. If you're travelling to the village this week, hold off on the weekly bundle, because the signal there comes and goes like NEPA light.

Night or weekly plan: best for students, streamers and WhatsApp sellers

Students on a tight budget do well with Glo's daily AWUF bundle. Lecture videos queued overnight go further on a night plan.

Heavy streamers need volume. Weekly Glo AWUF bundles, or an Airtel plan with the YouTube Night bonus, let you watch right through the evening without counting every video or checking your balance between episodes.

Night owls get the most from night plans. Laptop and game updates fit well here, as long as you start the download a few minutes after midnight.

WhatsApp sellers and small businesses should stick to a regular monthly plan. Customers message in the daytime, and night data does nothing for you while you sleep.

Night data code for Glo and Airtel, and how to check your balance

You buy night plans on your own line. On Glo:

  1. Dial *312#.
  2. Choose the Night and Weekend option.
  3. Pick the size and confirm.

Airtel's night data plan code is also *312#. Dial it and pick the night plan, or use the My Airtel app.

To see what's left of your night or regular data on Glo, dial *323*0# or *127*0#. On Airtel it's *323#, and on MTN it's *323*4#.

Regular plans can go to any number, including someone else's. The Glo weekly AWUF plan and the Airtel plans with the YouTube Night bonus are in the table above.

Frequently asked questions

Is night data cheaper than normal data?
Per GB, yes. Glo's ₦120 night bundle works out cheaper per GB than the Glo 10GB weekly plan. That only holds if you use the whole bundle before 5am, because whatever's left then expires.
What time does night data start on Glo and Airtel?
Both start at midnight and end at 5am. Glo's bundle lasts one night, so anything you haven't used by then expires.
Can I use night data during the day?
No. It works only between midnight and 5am. On Glo, night data goes first in those hours, and your main data takes over after that.
How do I check my night data balance on Glo or Airtel?
Dial *323*0# or *127*0# on Glo, or *323# on Airtel. Those codes show your regular data too.
What's the night data plan code for Glo and Airtel?
It's *312# on both. On Glo, choose Night and Weekend, pick the size and confirm. On Airtel, pick the night plan or use the My Airtel app.
What's MTN's night data code, and how much is it?
MTN has no night bundle for every tariff. Pulse users can dial *406# for Pulse Nightlife, which gives 500MB for ₦75. Pulse users can now move to MTN X, so check that your line still gets it. Most MTN users do better with the 20GB weekly AWUF bundle in the table above.
Can I buy night data for someone else's number?
No. You buy night plans on your own line through the network's menu. Regular plans can go to any number.
