MTN Airtime Compensation: Why You Got ₦20, Not a Data Refund
MTN's ₦20 to ₦1,436 credits pay for poor network from February to April 2026, not for data that vanished. See which of three groups you're in and what to do next.

No, the airtime credit MTN dropped on your line this week, often just ₦20, is not a refund for data that disappeared. MTN says it pays for poor network service between February and April 2026, and only lines in the worst-hit areas got it.
So if you have a data-depletion complaint, it's still open. Here's who got the MTN airtime compensation, why the amounts differ so much, and what to do next.
What the MTN airtime compensation pays for
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) told the networks to pay subscribers in local government areas (LGAs) where service kept failing. BusinessDay and Technext both name the two regulators behind the directive. MTN's newest round covers February to April 2026. An earlier round, listed on the NCC website, paid for November 2025 to January 2026.
Plenty of subscribers read the SMS and assumed MTN had finally answered their data complaints, so the company had to come out publicly and correct them. In its statement, reported by BusinessDay and Technext, MTN said the ₦20 credit was "the approved compensation applied to eligible lines and should not be interpreted as compensation for any specific airtime or data depletion claim". It's a payment for network service issues in your area.
The two work in different ways. Compensation looks at how the network performed across a whole LGA in a given month, while a depletion complaint looks at one bundle on one line. Only your own screenshots and dates can prove that kind of claim. That's why one can't settle the other.
According to Technext, screenshots shared online show credits from ₦20 up to ₦1,436. There's no flat rate. Legit.ng reports that MTN sizes each amount by the line's usual spending pattern. That's why the person sitting next to you on the bus may have got far more than you did.
You can use the credit for calls, SMS or data. Legit.ng reports that the credits are not set to expire, and BusinessDay says the same, in line with the regulators' directive. So you don't need to rush to spend it this week.
MTN isn't the only network paying. BusinessDay and Legit.ng both report that Airtel has also begun paying airtime compensation to eligible customers for the February-to-April period. We found no public timeline from Glo or T2 at the time of writing.
Here's how to read whatever landed on your line, or didn't:
| What you got | What it is | What it isn't | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₦20 credit | Poor-network compensation for a light-spending line in an affected LGA | A refund of lost data | Use it for calls or SMS; complain about the data separately |
| A bigger credit, up to ₦1,436 | The same compensation, sized for a line that spends more | Cash you can withdraw | Turn it into a data bundle from MTN's own menu |
| Nothing, but your network was bad | Your LGA or your line probably didn't meet the conditions for Feb–Apr 2026 | Proof MTN ignored you | Check the LGA list, then report the poor service to MTN and the NCC |
| Data that vanished | A separate complaint with its own evidence | Something this payout covers | Log a depletion complaint and keep screenshots |
Was your LGA on the NCC compensation list?
Whether you qualify comes down to your LGA. We checked the NCC's consumer compensation page on 5 October 2026. It lists eligible LGAs in a table sorted by state, network and the month each area failed. Only November 2025 to January 2026 appeared on that page. We found no February–April list there at the time of writing. That doesn't mean your area missed out, only that the list for this round wasn't public yet when we looked at the NCC page that afternoon.
The NCC adds one more condition. Your line needs at least one billed outgoing activity, such as a paid call or text, in the month the NCC assessed. A SIM that only ever receives calls wouldn't meet that rule, even in a failing LGA.
When the newer list goes up, checking it takes about a minute:
- Open the consumer compensation page on ncc.gov.ng.
- Find your state in the table.
- Find your LGA under that state.
- Look for MTN in the network column.
- Read the month column to see which assessment period your area failed.
Until the February–April list appears, ask MTN customer care directly whether your LGA qualified. Keep the compensation SMS as proof of what arrived. If you got that SMS, MTN has already treated your line as eligible for this round.
What to do next, based on what you got
If your neighbour got more, it isn't favouritism. Their line spends more than yours. Find the situation below that matches yours.
You got ₦20 and your data still vanished
You bought a monthly bundle, barely streamed anything, and by Thursday the balance message said it was all gone. The credit doesn't touch that problem. It's less than the ₦50 minimum when you top up MTN airtime online on AidaPay, where airtime pays 1.8% cashback (as at 5 October 2026). Treat it as a token for bad signal.
Data-depletion complaints are handled separately, and the queue is long. According to BusinessDay, between January and June 2026, MTN logged more than 12,000 data-depletion complaints. That's more than Airtel, Glo and T2 put together. Those three logged 11,184 between them.
A small airtime credit was never going to clear that queue, and MTN has now said so itself. Your complaint still needs its own evidence. Keep your data claim going in this order:
- Check your data balance and take a screenshot with the time showing. A guide to data balance codes to screenshot before you complain shows the right code for your plan.
- Write down when you bought the bundle and roughly what you used it for.
- Report the depletion to MTN customer care or at an MTN service centre.
- Ask for a complaint ticket number and write it down.
- If MTN doesn't fix it, call the NCC on 622 and give them that ticket number.
If you'd rather write than call, the NCC also takes complaints on its consumer portal at consumer.ncc.gov.ng. Either way, go to MTN first. The NCC's line is for complaints a network failed to resolve, and your ticket number shows you already tried.
Keep your screenshots together in one folder rather than scattered across your gallery, because when the agent asks for proof you'll want to send everything in one go. If the first call goes nowhere, note the agent's response and the date before you hang up.
You got a bigger credit and want the most data from it
Heavier spenders saw the larger amounts. If you run a business line or buy a big bundle every month, you're more likely to be near the top of that range. Dial *310# first to see your airtime balance. That's the code MTN's own help pages give for checking the main account. Then turn the credit into a bundle instead of letting it sit. If mobile data is on and you have no active bundle, your phone quietly browses off that airtime. A credit you were saving can disappear in one afternoon of WhatsApp videos. If you'd rather keep the airtime for calls, switch mobile data off until you've bought a bundle. You can turn it back on once the bundle confirmation SMS arrives.
A bundle tells you exactly what you're getting and for how long. Buy it through MTN's own menu, since the credit lives on your SIM. Dial *310# and note your balance, open MTN's data menu on the same SIM, and pick a bundle that costs no more than what you have. Check the price and the validity on screen before you confirm.
If the bundle you want costs more than the credit, you can top up the difference first and check the balance again, so the purchase doesn't fail halfway.
You got nothing, but your network was terrible
First, check whether your LGA made the list, using the LGA check above. This round only covers February to April 2026, and only LGAs that failed the quality checks. Your line also needs that billed outgoing activity in the same month. A missing credit doesn't mean MTN rejected a complaint you made, because this payout follows how your area performed and not any complaint you filed.
If your bad signal started in May, or your LGA wasn't assessed as failing, this payout won't include you. Report the poor service to MTN now, get a ticket number, and take it to 622 if nothing improves. A complaint on record today gives you something to point to if a later round comes.
Make the report specific. Note the date and time the problem happened, where you were, and what failed, whether that was dropped calls, no data or no signal at all. A clear report is easier for MTN to check and harder to close without an answer.
If you lost data, start today. Take the balance screenshot, then call MTN and ask for a ticket number before the evidence gets buried under newer messages.
