Ikeja Electric Payment Failed or No Token? 6 Causes, 6 Fixes

Paid Ikeja Electric but got no token, or the meter number keeps failing? Here are the six usual causes, how to spot each one and the fix, from postpaid mix-ups to pending debits.

Wrong number, wrong option, pending debit or old debt

Your Ikeja Electric payment left your account, but no token showed up. Most times the payment worked, and the token is already on your receipt or on its way by SMS within minutes.

Postpaid works differently. A postpaid payment never produces a token. The money goes to your account, and you get a receipt. If that doesn't explain it, one of the six causes below will, and each one comes with its fix. Everything here is current as at 14 October 2026.

The meter or account number won't verify

Three signs point here. The screen says "invalid meter", or "customer not found", or a stranger's name pops up at the confirm step. Prepaid and postpaid use different numbers. For prepaid, type the meter number printed on the front of your meter or on an old token receipt, not the account number from a bill. Postpaid customers use the account number on the paper bill or e-bill instead.

Read the name before you pay. Stop at once if it isn't yours, your landlord's or the name on the building's account. A wrong digit can still match a real customer, and that customer then enjoys your light.

Sometimes the number is right and still fails. That usually means the Ikeja Electric vending system is down for a while. Wait, then try again. Paying again through your bank app while the first payment is still spinning on another channel is exactly how people end up debited twice for one token.

You chose prepaid for a postpaid account, or the reverse

This mistake is a common reason money leaves your account and nothing happens. Your bank app, the Ikeja Electric payment portal and every other channel make you pick prepaid or postpaid before you type a single number on the screen. One wrong tap sends the money to the wrong kind of account.

Look at the meter on your wall. If it has a keypad and a screen that counts units, you're prepaid. No keypad means postpaid, with a monthly bill instead of tokens. A postpaid payment brings back a receipt only, never a 20-digit token.

To get the money moved:

  1. Keep the receipt and a screenshot of the debit alert.
  2. Copy the transaction reference from the receipt.
  3. Contact Ikeja Electric customer care with that reference.
  4. Ask them to move the payment to your correct account or meter.

If you need light tonight, buy again using the right option. Customer care handles the first payment as a separate claim.

Ikeja Electric payment status stuck on pending

Your bank says "debited" while the receipt says "pending". Don't pay again.

That word means your bank and the biller haven't finished confirming the money between themselves, and the token can't be issued until they do. Most of these sort themselves out. A prepaid token normally lands within minutes. Once the debit shows as successful and still nothing arrives, get the token back this way:

  1. Open your payment receipt and look for the 20-digit token.
  2. Check your payment history in the app or bank you paid with.
  3. Search your SMS inbox for the token message.
  4. Open the Token Retrieval page on the Ikeja Electric website and follow the prompts.
  5. If it still isn't there, call customer care with the transaction reference and ask them to resend the token.

The full recovery routine is in the guide to an IKEDC token that never arrived.

The amount is too small, too large, or partly swallowed by debt

Every channel sets its own minimum and maximum. Outside them, a payment simply won't go. On AidaPay, an IKEDC purchase runs from ₦500 to ₦100,000, with 0.2% back on each one (prices as at 14 October 2026). That means a ₦5,000 token pays ₦10 cashback into your wallet. You can buy an Ikeja Electric token on AidaPay for your own meter or for your mum's in another part of Lagos.

Tiny units are a different story. You top up after weeks away from the house, the payment goes through, and the meter shows far fewer units than you expected for the money you paid. Old debt on the meter is the usual culprit, because part of each vend goes to clearing it first.

Check your receipt for a debt or deduction line. If you can't see one, ask customer care whether the meter carries old debt. When there's no debt and the units still look low, your tariff band may explain it, so check your Ikeja Electric band.

Postpaid paid, but the bill still shows the old balance

Your postpaid money goes to your account and appears on your next monthly bill, not on the paper bill you're already holding in your hand at home. If the next bill ignores it too, call customer care with the reference and ask them to confirm the posting.

Pay only through official channels. Ikeja Electric doesn't let linesmen, engineers or sales representatives collect bill money or reconnection fees, so never hand cash to anyone in its uniform. Keep every receipt, because it's your only proof that you paid.

If your postpaid bills keep looking like estimates, ask for a meter through the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme. You can track your MAP metering status on the Ikeja Electric website.

The token came, but the meter refuses it

Hold the receipt next to the meter and compare the meter numbers digit by digit. A token bought for the flat upstairs will never load on yours. If the numbers match and the token still isn't working, see the guide to common electricity token problems.

Still stuck? Ikeja Electric contact number and complaints

Gather everything before you call. That means the receipt, the transaction reference, your meter or account number, and the date, time and amount of the payment. With all of it ready, the agent can trace the payment in one call instead of three.

Call Ikeja Electric on 0201-7000-250 or 0201-227-2940. Email works too: customercare@ikejaelectric.com. For anything bought on AidaPay, open Settings, then Support, and send the transaction reference by chat, ticket, call or email.

If the problem drags on, write to the Ikeja Electric customer complaints unit and keep the acknowledgement. NERC gives distribution companies up to 15 working days to resolve it, depending on how complex it is. If that time passes, or the answer you get doesn't satisfy you, take the acknowledgement letter and all your receipts to the nearest NERC Customer Forum office.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an Ikeja Electric token take after payment?
A prepaid token usually shows on the receipt within minutes and comes by SMS as well. If your bank shows a successful debit and nothing arrives, check your transaction history, then use the Token Retrieval page on the Ikeja Electric website or call customer care with the reference before you pay again.
Why does my meter number say invalid when I buy a token?
The usual reason is a wrong number or the wrong option. Prepaid meters take the meter number printed on the meter, while postpaid accounts take the account number on the bill. If both are right, the vending system may be down, so wait and try again.
Can I pay my Ikeja Electric postpaid bill online?
Yes. Choose postpaid, enter the account number from your bill and pay. You get a receipt instead of a token, and the payment shows on your next bill.
What is the Ikeja Electric customer care number?
Call 0201-7000-250 or 0201-227-2940, or email customercare@ikejaelectric.com. Have your receipt, transaction reference and meter or account number ready.
How do I check my Ikeja Electric payment history?
Open the app or bank you paid with and look at your payment history. Each receipt there shows the transaction reference, and the 20-digit token if you're prepaid. Keep every receipt, because it's your only proof that you paid.
Can I buy an Ikeja Electric token online?
Yes. Your bank app, the Ikeja Electric portal and VTU apps all sell tokens. Pick prepaid, type the meter number printed on your meter, and read the name before you pay.
Why won't my Ikeja Electric token load on the meter?
Hold the receipt next to the meter and compare the meter numbers digit by digit, because a token bought for another meter will never load on yours. If the numbers match and the meter still shows an error, follow the guide to common electricity token problems.
Buy your electricity token in the appEvery DisCo, token delivered instantly, receipt kept for you.
