How to Become a Data Reseller in Nigeria: What 1GB Really Pays
No bulk stock, no ₦50,000 start-up. See what an agent pays and keeps on 1GB of MTN, Airtel and Glo data, and the four beliefs that cost new resellers money.

Most people think a data reselling business in Nigeria starts with a big bulk purchase. It doesn't. On an AidaPay agent account, you buy each bundle only after your customer pays, so all you need is a small wallet float and a one-time upgrade fee that the app shows you upfront.
As an agent, you pay ₦400 for MTN 1GB Data Transfer, valid for 7 days. Your cashback on it is ₦6, while a normal user gets ₦4. Prices are as at 14 October 2026. Below, four beliefs about how to become a data reseller in Nigeria meet live prices, and a worked 1GB example on MTN, Airtel and Glo shows the profit.
"I need ₦50,000 to buy bulk data before I can start"
As a data reseller, you buy data, airtime and bills on a VTU platform and sell them on at a small markup. If the term is new, here's what VTU means and how it works.
There's no stock to hold. You keep money in one wallet and buy each customer's bundle from it the moment they pay, so a customer who changes their mind costs you nothing.
Day one takes three things. First comes a smartphone with data (your own will do), then the one-time agent upgrade fee, which leaves your wallet only after the app shows you the amount. Last, you need a float, meaning money in your wallet to cover a day's orders.
₦2,000 of float covers five MTN weekly bundles. Top it up by card or by transfer to your own dedicated account number.
Before you take customers, verify your account with your BVN, your NIN and a liveness check (a short face scan in the app). Verification raises your limits, and on a busy Friday evening, with orders still coming in, you can't afford to hit a ceiling.
"One sale pays so little, it isn't worth it": is selling data profitable?
One sale pays little. Stack up a month of sales and the picture changes. AidaPay's top agents earn ₦150,000 to ₦250,000 a month. Their money comes from cashback on every sale, plus referral commissions, games and vouchers in the app. Volume is what gets them there, because the same customers come back every week to buy data, airtime and bills from one agent wallet.

Start with one sale. Your profit on it is your markup plus the agent cashback.
You pay, you sell, you keep: one gigabyte on MTN, Airtel and Glo
Agent prices and cashback as at 14 October 2026. The selling price is an example markup you'd set yourself, not a market rate.
| Plan | You pay | Agent cashback | Your net cost | Example selling price | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MTN 1GB Data Transfer, 7 days | ₦400 | ₦6 | ₦394 | ₦450 | ₦56 |
| Airtel 1GB, 1 day | ₦495 | ₦5 | ₦490 | ₦545 | ₦55 |
| Glo 1GB, 30 days | ₦440 | ₦8.28 | ₦431.72 | ₦490 | ₦58.28 |
To sell at these agent rates, start your data business on AidaPay, where the full cashback ladder sits too.
Normal users get less back on each plan: ₦4 on MTN, ₦2 on Airtel and ₦5.18 on Glo. Agents on MTN data earn 1.5% cashback, one and a half times the normal user's 1%. Next to your markup, a few naira looks tiny, but repeat it on every sale, every day, with customers who return week after week, and it adds up.
"The cheapest plan is the one customers want"
Price brings a customer to you once. How long the data lasts decides whether they come back next week. Sell a 1-day plan to someone who needed a week, and they'll blame you by tomorrow night, not the network.
Here's the same gigabyte with different lifespans, at agent prices.
| Plan | Agent price | Lasts |
|---|---|---|
| MTN 1GB Data Transfer | ₦400 | 7 days |
| MTN 1GB + 1.5min | ₦492 | 1 day |
| Airtel 1GB | ₦495 | 1 day |
| Airtel 1GB weekly | ₦790 | 7 days |
| Glo 1GB | ₦350 | 3 days |
| Glo 1GB | ₦360 | 7 days |
| Glo 1GB | ₦440 | 30 days |
On MTN, the weekly plan costs ₦92 less than the daily bundle with minutes. On Glo, an extra ₦90 moves your customer from the three-day plan to the one that lasts a month, so list both side by side and let them choose.
Send balance help with every sale. On MTN 1GB Data Transfer, the customer dials *323*4#, while Glo and Airtel customers dial *323#.
"If an order fails or goes to the wrong number, the platform sorts it out"
Only half true.
When a purchase fails, the money returns to your wallet automatically. Pending orders need one extra step: open Transactions and tap requery, or raise a ticket with the order's reference.
Wrong numbers are different. You typed the number, and the app delivers to exactly what you typed, so read it back to your customer before you confirm with your PIN.
Credit sales are your risk too, because one unpaid MTN 1GB order wipes out what you'd keep on seven paid ones. Everyone has a cousin whose "I'll pay you tomorrow" never quite arrives.
Keep your PIN to yourself, even when a caller claims to be from support. Send data only after the money shows in your account, because a forwarded screenshot of an alert isn't payment, no matter how real it looks.
How to become a data reseller in Nigeria: your first week
Your first customers already exist. Think family, hostel mates, the shop next door and the office group chat: anyone who asks you for data now.
- Upgrade to an agent account and pay the one-time fee from your wallet.
- Verify with your BVN, NIN and the liveness check.
- Fund your wallet with your float.
- Post a fixed price list on your WhatsApp status.
- Collect payment and wait until it lands.
- Read the number back, buy the plan and confirm with your PIN.
- Tell the customer how to check their balance.
Log every sale on one line in a notebook or spreadsheet: date, number, plan, price paid, cashback, price charged and whether they've paid. Each evening, match it against Transactions in the app.
Set your prices today, post them on your status, and start with the people who already send you "abeg, buy me data".
