What is VTU, and how does a VTU business work?

What VTU means

VTU stands for virtual top-up. Instead of buying a scratch card and loading a PIN, the airtime or data is sent straight to a phone number from an app or website. The same idea now covers bills: electricity tokens, DStv, GOtv and StarTimes subscriptions, and exam PINs.

When people say "VTU website" or "VTU app", they mean a platform that sells these services electronically - often cheaper than buying from the network directly, with cashback.

How VTU works

1. A VTU platform connects to the networks and billers (directly or through licensed aggregators) and buys airtime and data in bulk.
2. You fund a wallet on the platform - by bank transfer or card.
3. You choose the service, enter the phone number, meter or smartcard number, and pay from the wallet.
4. The platform sends the order to the network or biller, and the value lands on the number within seconds. Failed orders are refunded to the wallet.

How VTU sellers earn

A VTU seller (often called an agent or reseller) earns in two ways:

• Cashback or commission from the platform on every sale - agents get a better rate than regular users.
• Their own markup - the difference between what the customer pays them and what they pay the platform.

How to start a VTU business

1. Download AidaPay and open an account.
