How to Check Airtel Number: *121*3*4# and Codes That Fail
Dial *121*3*4# to see your Airtel number free, even with no airtime. Plus the menu route, the backups when USSD won't open, and the Airtel India codes that fail here.

Dial *121*3*4# from your Airtel SIM and your number shows up on the screen. No airtime, no data, no charge. It works on a button phone too.
Plenty of pages on how to check Airtel number mix in codes that were built for Airtel's network in India, and those fail on a Nigerian line. Below is the longer menu route, what to try when USSD won't open, and the short list of codes to stop dialling.
How to check Airtel number: USSD, the app or phone settings
If the shortcut keeps timing out, walk through the main menu instead. You only reply twice.

- Dial *121# from the Airtel line you want to check.
- Reply 3 to open My Account.
- Reply 4 to open My Number.
- Write the number down before the screen closes.
If USSD won't respond, sign in to the Airtel Thanks app. You'll see your number right on the home screen.
On an iPhone, go to Settings, then Phone, and read the My Number line. Trust it only when the Airtel SIM is inside that same phone, because after a SIM swap the line can go blank or keep showing an old number from before. Android tucks the same detail under Settings > About phone > SIM status, but many Nigerian SIMs leave that field empty, so don't panic if yours is blank and go back to the shortcut.
Dual-SIM phones ask which SIM should send the code. Pick Airtel. Still stuck? Send a friend a free "please call me" by dialling *141*, then their number, then #, typed as one string like *141*0802XXXXXXX#. Your number arrives inside the text on their phone. Or ring 111. Customer care can read it out.
Why the code hasn't moved since 2023
Nothing about this route is new. Back in January 2023, the shortcut and the *121# menu worked exactly as they do today. My Account and My Number sat in the same spots, and two years later you'd still find them there, with not a single step changed. In those days *123# showed your airtime balance. Never your number.
Then came mid-2023. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) gave every network one shared set of short codes, so airtime balance became *310# and data balance became *323# on Airtel, MTN and Glo alike. SIM and NIN checks went to *996#, and the same list gave you codes for borrowing airtime, switching on Do-Not-Disturb and porting your number. Old network codes kept working until 17 May. The full list followed in June. Not one of the shared codes shows your own number, which is why Airtel's menu still does that job.
Barring followed in 2024.
Unlinked lines faced a first deadline in late February. That date slipped twice. The final cut-off landed on 14 September 2024. To link, Airtel customers dialled *121*1#, typed in their NIN and then waited for a confirmation text to arrive before they could stop worrying about losing the line. If your line was ever barred, try the shortcut anyway before you write off the SIM, because the worst that can happen is a menu that won't open and you've spent nothing.
Airtel codes on a Nigerian SIM, and whether each one shows your number.
| Code | What it does | Shows your number? |
|---|---|---|
| *121*3*4# | Jumps straight to My Number | Yes |
| *121# | Opens Airtel's main menu | Yes, through My Account, then My Number |
| *310# | Checks your airtime balance | No |
| *323# | Checks your data balance | No |
| *996# | Checks your SIM registration and NIN-SIM linkage | No |
| *121*1# | Links your NIN to your Airtel line | No |
| *282# | Airtel India's number-check code | No, it fails on a Nigerian SIM |
| SMS MYNUM to 282 | Airtel India's text route | No, it fails on a Nigerian SIM |
| 55225 | Airtel India's voice line | No, it fails on a Nigerian SIM |
| WhatsApp 9810099999 | Airtel India's chat line | No, it isn't for Nigerian lines |
Why *282# and other Indian Airtel codes won't work here
Search for your Airtel number and a good chunk of what comes up was written for Airtel's customers in India, complete with tidy screenshots and steps that look perfectly official. On a Nigerian SIM, *282# returns an error or nothing at all. So do the text, voice and WhatsApp routes. Ignore any claim that your number has ten digits, too, because that's the Indian format and you'll only end up doubting a perfectly good Nigerian line.
A Nigerian Airtel number has 11 digits and starts with 0. For the international format, drop that zero and put +234 in front. Airtel's series includes 0802, but a prefix alone can't prove the network, since a ported number keeps every digit when it moves to another operator.
And the long serial printed on the SIM card? That only identifies the card. It isn't your number.
Check it before anyone buys you airtime
Your number matters most on the day somebody tops you up. One wrong digit, and the whole recharge goes to a stranger's line. Run the shortcut first. Then copy exactly what the screen shows, digit by digit, instead of reciting it from memory while your sister waits on the other end with her banking app open.
Prices as at 10 October 2026. On AidaPay, the smallest single Airtel top-up is ₦50. The largest is ₦10,000. Every recharge earns 1% cashback.
When you're ready, buy Airtel airtime online for your own line or someone else's. Once it goes through, dial *310# and watch the balance land. Keep the full list of Airtel USSD codes close for the other everyday shortcuts.
