Airtime not received after debit: 4 causes and how to fix each

Debited but no airtime? Find out if it's pending, a wrong digit, the wrong network or an old loan eating your top-up, and who to contact first to get your money back.

Pending, wrong digit, wrong network or a loan: find yours

You bought airtime in your bank app, the money left, and your balance didn't move. Most of the time the recharge is still pending or your bank has already reversed it, so give it a few minutes and read your bank SMS before you do anything else.

If the debit still hasn't cleared, tell your bank the amount, the phone number and the time you paid. A different problem starts when the bank says successful and your airtime is still not received, because then something else went wrong: a wrong digit, the wrong network, an old loan or a subscription. Each leaves its own clues.

Airtime not received? Check these two things first

Dial 310 on the line you topped up. The NCC made 310 the balance code on every network, so it works the same on MTN, Airtel, Glo and T2. On MTN, these MTN USSD codes for balance and loans cover the rest.

Then open the payment in your bank or payment app and look at the status, which will read successful, pending or reversed, and that single word tells you which section below is yours.

You may have heard about a 30-second refund rule. It isn't law yet. In January 2026 the CBN and the NCC announced a joint framework for failed airtime and data purchases, and the CBN published it as an exposure draft in February. As at 23 October 2026, it's still a draft. The draft aims for a refund within 30 seconds when money leaves and nothing arrives, and within 24 hours for a pending payment. Treat both as targets, not promises, and keep your receipt until it's settled.

Still pending: how long to wait before you complain

You're in the right place if the bank shows "pending" or "processing", or if the debit went through and you never got a credit SMS from the network or a reversal.

  1. Check the payment status in your bank or payment app, then look through your SMS for a credit alert from the network.
  2. Wait a few minutes. Most pending recharges either land or reverse on their own.
  3. If the money is still gone, contact your bank with the amount, phone number, date and time.
  4. Keep the receipt or confirmation SMS until it's settled.

Twenty-four hours is the regulators' target for a pending recharge. So if a full day passes with no airtime and no refund, take it to your bank with the receipt.

Bought airtime for the wrong number? What you can and can't get back

Read the number on your receipt slowly, one digit at a time. One wrong digit and the airtime landed on somebody else's working line, while your bank still shows a successful payment because nothing failed on its side.

If you know who got it, ask them to send it back. Strangers are harder. Call the network that owns that number, ask for a complaint reference, then raise a dispute with your bank and quote it.

Airtime not received because of a typo is the hardest case to win. Nobody guarantees a reversal once airtime reaches a valid line, and no secret code pulls it back. The same goes for airtime you transfer from your own SIM to a wrong number, except your bank played no part there, so go straight to your network.

Right number, wrong network: ported lines and the network dropdown

Most payment screens ask for the network before the number. Pick Airtel for an MTN line and the recharge will usually fail, then reverse by itself. A "successful" payment to the wrong network is messier. You'll need a dispute with your bank and a complaint to the network the line really belongs to.

Why 0803 isn't always MTN any more

Mobile number portability lets people switch networks and keep their number, so your cousin's MTN-looking 0803 line could be sitting on Glo today.

Under the February draft, networks would check every number against the ported-number database before a recharge goes through. Until that applies, the check is yours. Before you pay, ask the owner which network name shows at the top of their screen.

Airtime came in and vanished: a loan or subscription took it

The credit SMS lands. Seconds later, a "loan repaid" message follows. An old airtime loan just ate your top-up, and annoying as that is, the recharge worked and your bank owes you nothing.

Glo takes borrowed airtime back from your next recharge, and every Glo loan carries a 15% service charge. Say you borrow ₦100. The charge comes off first, so ₦85 lands on your line. Your next top-up repays the full ₦100 before you see any of it, so a ₦500 recharge leaves ₦400. You can't borrow again until the loan is cleared.

MTN XtraTime works the same way, and it's back on *303# after a break earlier this year. So if MTN XtraTime got deducted from a fresh top-up, an old loan was repaid.

While you're scrolling for "repaid", watch for "renewed" or "subscription" as well, because a caller tune or content service can renew by itself and swallow new credit the moment it lands. Call 300 and ask your network to cancel it.

Bought it on AidaPay and it hasn't arrived

In the app, open Transactions and tap the purchase. From there you can requery a pending order to fetch its latest status, or raise a ticket if it's stuck. Your receipt carries the transaction reference, hash and session ID.

To reach a person, go to Settings, then Support, and pick chat, a complaint ticket, a call or email. Paste the transaction reference or hash into your first message so the team can find your order fast, and check the AidaPay help and support page for answers to common questions.

Nothing worked: who to contact, in this order

Keep every receipt and reference number, then work down this list.

  1. Your bank or payment app, if money left your account. A debit always starts there.
  2. Your network, on 300 from your own line. That's the customer care code on MTN, Airtel, Glo and T2.
  3. The NCC, if neither of them sorts it out. Dial 622 for free. You can also call the Consumer Affairs Bureau on +234-209-461-7000 or email consumer@ncc.gov.ng.

Next time, read the number and network back to yourself before you tap pay. Buy on a steady connection. For the next everyday snag, the fix-it guides walk you through it.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a failed airtime refund take?
The CBN–NCC framework, an exposure draft dated 5 February 2026, aims for a refund within 30 seconds when you're debited and nothing arrives. For a pending recharge, the target is 24 hours. Neither is law yet, so complain to your bank if a full day passes with no airtime and no refund.
Can I get back airtime I sent to the wrong number?
Nothing guarantees it, because the airtime landed on a valid line. If you know the person, ask them to send it back. If you don't, get a complaint reference from the network that owns that number and raise a dispute with your bank.
Why was my airtime deducted right after I recharged?
Usually an old airtime loan took it back. On Glo, borrowing ₦100 puts ₦85 on your line, and your next ₦500 top-up leaves ₦400 once the loan is repaid. A subscription that renews by itself can also eat new credit, so call 300 to cancel it.
How do I report a failed recharge to the NCC?
Start with your bank, then your network on 300. If neither sorts it out, dial 622 free or email consumer@ncc.gov.ng, and have your receipt and reference number ready.
Is there a law that banks must refund failed airtime?
Not yet. As at 23 October 2026, the CBN–NCC framework on failed airtime and data purchases is still an exposure draft. It proposes refunds within 30 seconds, or 24 hours if pending. Until it applies, report a debit with no airtime to your bank first.
I bought airtime from my bank but didn't receive it. What should I do first?
Dial 310 on the line you topped up to check the balance; it works on MTN, Airtel, Glo and T2. Then read the payment status in your bank app. Pending means wait a few minutes, while successful means you should check the number, the network and your SMS for a loan recovery.
Why does my bank say the recharge was successful when no airtime came?
Successful only means the money left your bank. The airtime may have gone to a wrong digit or the wrong network, or an old loan or subscription took it the moment it landed. Your receipt and SMS history will show which.
Top up airtime in secondsAny network, discount on every recharge, no USSD stress.
